The slogan 'The Best Apples on Earth' certainly applies to the numerous apple varieties grown in the State of Washington! Every year Washington exports about 30% of their entire production to more than 60 countries around the world. In the 2009-10 crop year the quantity exported was over 32.3 million 42-lb bushel cartons! Five Washington grown varieties (Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala and Fuji) make up over 95% of all exports, but new varieties such as Honeycrisp, Cameo® and Cripps Pink are becoming increasingly popular with international consumers.

Red Delicious is Washington's primary export variety representing about 48% of our total volume, but changing consumer preferences overseas have pushed Gala to over 5.9 million cartons exported with Golden Delicious at 3.9, Granny Smith at 2.6 and Fuji directly behind at 2.4 million each (2009-10).

Washington Apple Commission promotional programs are implemented by 13 contractors in key export markets, with activities occurring in over 30 different countries. On the consumer side, the Commission conducts sampling at retail stores and markets, provides information on the uses and benefits of consuming apples, advertises in print and radio media, and implements other activities to increase awareness of Washington apples. Contractors also work closely with importers, wholesalers and retailers to provide information on how to take care of Washington apples to make sure that their customers are receiving the high quality they have come to expect when they buy Washington apples.
